Why I choose to breastfeed my children

Breastfeeding is not easy. Despite my best efforts to prepare myself for the journey, there were ample obstacles along the way. I had cracked nipples, gouged milk ducts and even lumpy armpits. I was fortunate enough to overcome them, with the support of specialists, my friends and family.

I was lucky enough to breastfeed my first child till he was two years old, and I plan to do the same for my second child. Let me share why I choose this difficult path.

Benefits for babies

  1. Stronger immune system. Mothers provides antibodies which protect the baby against infection. These antibodies transfer to the baby through her milk. Think of the baby enjoying the immune system of their mommy. Formula, despite their nutrition, does not provide this benefit.
  2. Lowers the chance of allergic conditions, such as asthma and eczema
  3. Studies have shown that children who were breast-fed are significantly less likely to become obese later in childhood.
  4. Babies who are breast-fed have fewer dental cavities throughout their lives.
  5. Babies exclusively breastfed have less chance of developing diabetes.
Benefits for Mommies
  1. Contracts the uterus. Assists the uterus in returning to its pre-pregnancy size and reduces post-partum bleeding.
  2. Lose the pregnancy weight. Helps mothers to lose weight after birth. Mothers burn many calories during lactation as their bodies produce milk.
  3. Reduces the risk of breast cancer later in life.
  4. Convenient. There is no milk bottle, milk container, and warm water to bring along when we travel. We just need a breastfeeding cover.
  5. Encourage a stronger sense of connection and bonding between mother and baby.
Mommies love their children and want to provide the best for them. While breastfeeding has its benefits, there are trade-offs too. I was brought up drinking formula milk, but I was not less loved.
Motherhood is much more than just about breastfeeding. And our children definitely need a happy mother more than breast milk.
